Being Realistic

Was watching a documentary on the sex trade in India, which focussed on red light areas in Mumbai (Bombay) and Calcutta. If you have read anything i write, you will see that i focus more on the theory rather than ground reality; more on broad generalizations rather than direct answers to questions posed.

As i continued to watch the documentary, my initial reaction was that it was immoral and how wrong it was that even children became unwilling actors in this tragedy. What i realized that such a view will never help in finding a solution. Prostitution is the oldest profession and my views only prevent me from seeing the reality of the situation.

I was surprised by what the women in Calcutta had to say; the very same women who practise this profession. Their concern was simple. They did not want to be harassed by the police - who only took bribes and requested sexual favours after an arrest - and wanted to make sure that their health was not compromized. To address this, they formed a labour union! They advice each other on issues that matter to them. They want their profession to be legally recognized so that like other professions, the minimum age limit becomes applicable and minors' rights are protected.

Not once did they talk about morality. They focussed on finding solutions and nothing else.

Dude,
Morlity is something which comes to you by , your upbringing, and your conscience, which is again driven by upbringing.... A guy who smokes dosent see it as a big deal if his dad also does it... and you start toa ccept what you are fter a while..
The best exampls... i am kinda buzzed now, after a few drinks, but I do not feel something wrong morally, even though i used to fee that way.....the enst time for me to reply i guess....
Look at it for the point of view of what i am seeing it currently.. its not wrong by any means.... You learn to live with your life, with whatever ife has to offer for you...
As you ahd said in someone elses blog, everybody is an actor, and they just try to do the best they can...

does this make you ponder?

"The picture of the world we have from physics, because it is built only out of mental machines, no longer has any definite feeling of valuein it: value has become sidelined as a matter of opinion, not intrinsic to the nature of the world at all."

I just have one thing to say...
Its ok if people chose to get into the profession, but its the most unforgivable sin if people sold n forced others(incl children) into the profession!

The sky was bleak,
a storm approaching fast,
the cows on the meadow chomped,
on the green grass so sweet.

The calm shattered ever so suddenly,
a squeal of thunder,
sheets of cold rain soaked the ground.

the cows continued to chomp,
unconcerned,
the sun came up in an hour,
the cows were still chomping,
unconcerned.

If they have been forced into it, for a woman, its equivalent to dying..once they die it doesnt matter how many more time they get killed!

i live a self absorbed life (like the cow on the meadow) and any despite what ever you or anybody might say (like the squealing thunder) will continue do to so. i can only feign concern at their plight but if i did care, i would do something, not turn a blind eye.

moralizing or discussing doesn't help in any way. it is only one more luxury we have!

can u explain the above in terms that lesser mortals like me can understand?

Since you are an engineer, by choice or by destiny or because your parents whim, let me ask you if these are the steps that you (or for that matter any scientific persona) would undertake towards A problem. PS: I will need some help to develop the sequence of steps.

1. Observe environment
(check: watched documentary while eating jalapeno kettle chips)

2. Identify problem / bottleneck
(check: realized plight of s.workers in India and some of the problems they face + noted the problem that you/common-youth-of-today dont do anything , even think about it). Some might sight this as a non existent cause with the logic - I dont go to the red light area's, so its not me who is causing the problem or deepening it.

3. Identify problem root causes
|check: incorrect attitude of today's youth -> in turn caused by a. society do's and do not's
b. too much to do in our own lives, so that we don't fall behind in the competition.
c. 'Each dog for himself and close friends' philosophy

4. Identify plan to remove or moderate rot causes NOT JUST IN YOU/ME/ ARUN etc.. but on a mass scale. How about mass hypnotization - just brain stormin.
note2self: blogs may not help.

Got lost here ! How about some one takes the torch from here.

it isn't the engineer who is doing the thinking for this article!
